The Marks of True Religion
Most of us have known someone who never misses a service and knows their Bible cold, yet whose tongue and choices at home tell a different story. It’s possible to feel religious and have none of it reach the heart. In James 1:26-27, James gives three diagnostic marks that expose whether religion is real or an empty shell. First, a bridled tongue, because uncontrolled speech reveals a heart that hasn’t actually changed. Second, compassion for orphans and widows, the ancient world’s picture of total vulnerability, people who could never repay a kindness shown to them. Third, a life kept unstained by the world’s pull, holding purity and engagement together rather than choosing one over the other. None of this is a ladder we climb to earn God’s acceptance. It’s the visible fruit of a heart grace has already renewed. Christ alone fulfilled every mark perfectly: his tongue never needed bridling, he visited us in our own spiritual orphanhood, and he touched a sinful world without being stained by it. Because his religion, not ours, stands accepted before the Father, we pursue these marks not to be accepted, but because we already are.
