Receive With Meekness The Implanted Word
We instinctively try to tidy ourselves up before coming to God, sorting out our anger and cleaning up our act first. James shows why that instinct is backwards. Human effort, however determined, was never designed to produce God’s righteousness. James gives two commands instead. First, put off all filthiness and remaining wickedness, not through gritted teeth and willpower, but as the fruit of what we already are in Christ. Second, receive with meekness the implanted word, an active, welcoming embrace rather than passive hearing. This word is Scripture itself, planted at the new birth and still growing, carrying the ongoing power to save. That saving work continues day by day through the Spirit, not through our own consistency. Assurance rests not on how well we’ve managed our sin this week, but on the sufficiency of what Christ has already accomplished and promised to finish.
