The Cost of Following Christ
In John 21:18–19, the risen Christ speaks plainly to Peter about the true cost of discipleship. Having been restored by grace, Peter is not promised ease, but is told that following Christ will lead to suffering and ultimately death, all for the glory of God. This passage confronts the illusion of control and reveals that the Christian life is one of surrender under the sovereign hand of Christ. Yet it is not a call to earn favour, but a call grounded in the finished work of Jesus, who has already obeyed perfectly and secured salvation. The same Lord who ordains the path also sustains His people, and so the command remains unchanged. “Follow me.” The cost is real, but the One who calls is infinitely greater.
