The book of Amos is a direct and penetrating word from God, delivered through the prophet Amos, confronting a people who appeared outwardly prosperous and religious, yet were inwardly corrupt and unfaithful. Addressing the northern kingdom of Israel, Amos exposes the emptiness of external religion divorced from true faith, as their worship continued while injustice, oppression, and sin were tolerated. From a Reformed Baptist confessional perspective, the book highlights God’s holiness and justice within the covenant. Privilege does not remove accountability, it increases it. Mere association with the covenant people does not save, but only genuine repentance and faith. Yet even in judgment, there is hope, as Amos points forward to the restoration of David’s fallen tent, ultimately fulfilled in Christ, through whom God gathers and redeems His people.
