Casting Lots and God’s Providence
John 19:24 records the soldiers casting lots for Jesus’ tunic, an act that seemed to them nothing more than a casual game beneath the cross. Yet Scripture says this took place “to fulfil the Scripture”specifically Psalm 22:18, written a thousand years earlier. What looked like chance was in fact divine providence. The soldiers acted freely, but their decisions perfectly fulfilled God’s ancient Word. This moment shows that even the smallest, most indifferent actions of unbelieving men are governed by the sovereign hand of God. If He can direct the roll of dice at Calvary, then nothing in the believer’s life lies outside His care or control.
